Abstract

Ten (10) samples with five (5) from both the limestone and the shale bodies at Ewekoro and Akinbo formation were selected to chemical and mineralogical analyses using the X-ray Fluorescence (XrF) and X-ray Diffraction (XrD)  techniques. The results revealed values of CaO (46.63 – 50.75%), SiO2 (3.46 – 13.60%), Al2O3 (0.72 – 2.03%) and Fe2O3 (1.18 – 2.25%) and major minerals such as calcite (85.41 – 92.57%), kaolinite (4.92 – 8.15%) and quartz (1.04 – 7.42%) in the limestone and SiO2 (45.49 – 52.83%), Al2O3 (14.46 – 18.41%), Fe2O3 (4.43 – 7.62%), CaO (3.26 – 14.36%), MgO (3.37 – 4.43%) and major minerals such as kaolinite (26.58 – 46.41%), quartz (5.58 – 49.49%), palygorskite (11.23 – 25.99%), smectite (7.62 – 17.10%) and calcite (0.11 – 2.41%) in the shale. From the above results, it is observed that the Lime Saturation Factor (LSF) for the limestone samples ranges from 117 – 413 and fall within the specification for the production of Portland cement.
