Abstract

This study investigated the impact of scaffolding Teaching Strategy on achievement of Senior Secondary School Students in physics in Niger state of Nigeria. It also studied the impacts of scaffolding on the location of the school and on gender. Three research questions were raised and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The study adopted a quasi-experimental of the pre-test, post-test control group design. One hundred and twenty (120) students in SSS 2 were randomly selected from four senior secondary schools in two Local Government Areas of Niger state respectively. Physics Achievement Test (PAT) with reliability of 0.72 was the instrument used for data collection by person. Mean and standard deviation were used for the analysis of the research questions. The hypotheses were tested using t-test statistic at the level of significance of 0.05. Results showed that students exposed to scaffolding teaching strategy performed significantly better than their counterparts who were exposed to conventional teaching strategy. Also, students of schools in urban locations had better academic achievement than their counterparts in rural locations. The researchers recommended that the physics teachers should not stick to one particular method of teaching but should endeavor to use variety methods such as scaffolding teaching strategy among others, taking cognizance of the topic and the needs of the students. Secondly, the school authorities and ministry of Education should ensure adequate and regular supervision of schools and instructions to ensure that suitable instructional strategies are used to improve student’s performance.
