Abstract

This study presents the influences of scattering phase shifts and cross sections on the dynamics of scattering resonances in collision processes. The basic concept of partial wave analysis, including the theory of spherical Bessel functions was adopted in obtaining scattering phase shifts, cross sections and total cross sections for different angular momentum values. For low-energy (s-wave) potential interactions, the spherical Bessel function of the first kind is usually sustained, while that of the second kind is suppressed, whereas for high energy interactions both become valid. The scattering parameters were numerically evaluated. Generally, even though the total cross-sections were high, with weak phase shifts for weak potential interactions, resonances were never recorded. At strong interaction potentials, resonances were observed, and the number of bound states also increased. The sharpness of the spikes on the scattering cross-sections, as well as the resonant energies of the resonances increased with increasing strength of interaction potential. The overall influences of the scattering phase shifts and cross sections on the dynamics of scattering resonances were dictated by the strength of the interaction potential.
