Assignment problem is a special type of transportation problem which is also a resource allocation problem. Here we have n jobs to perform with n persons and the problem is how to distribute the job to the different persons involved. The objective of the study is to mathematically modelNasarawa State University, Keffiproject assignment problem and minimize total cost of executing the task in. The Hungarian method was employed to solve the problem and QM Optimization Software was employed for validation of the solution. The research focused on the use of the assignment problem for placement and selection of project to a given contractor in order to optimize cost. It can however be applied to any situation that can be modelled as an assignment problem. It was observed that the solution that gave maximum achievable results from a contractor or the minimum regret for assigning a project to a contractor was 237 million naira. The study concludes that the use of a scientific approach gives a systematic and transparent solution as compared with a haphazard method. Using the more scientific assignment problem model for the placement and selection of the contractors to various university projects gives a better result. Management may benefit from the proposed approach for placement and selection of contractors to guarantee optimal results from them. We therefore recommend that the assignment problem model should be adopted by the university Physical and Planning Unit (PPU), for assignment of project and placement of contractors.
