Abstract

The paper proposes a multi-layer perceptron neural network-based model for rainfall prediction. The proposed model was used to represent the rainfall situation in Abia State for 2 years (2005-2006). Simulation studies were carried out to validate the proposed model by using the data obtained from the Field Situation Assessment of Wet Season Agricultural Production in Nigeria, which was jointly conducted by the National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS) and Projects Coordinating Unit (PCU).The performance of the multi-layered perceptron (MLP) neural network-based model was compared with that of a linear regression model. The result shows that the proposed MLP neural network-based model has better performance than the linear regression model, in terms of the prediction accuracy.
