Abstract

This work focuses on the design and fabrication of an electromechanical yam pounding machine, with improved longevity as againstpreviously designed yam pounders. The machine consists of a shaft, electric motor, beater, pulleys, frame, and pans with improved venting system for the purpose of cooling to prevent overheating during operation. An internal timing system is introduced to help improve in the usability, and a voltage regulator is incorporated to help preserve the electric motor against overloading and large voltage fluctuation. Mild steel and stainless steel materials were used in this machine based on availability, strength, cost, corrosion resistance and appearance. The machine was tested and found to produce pounded yam of high quality texture and smoothness when compared to existing pounders.
