Abstract

Seventeen vertical electrical soundings were carried out in Orogun main town to obtain information on the sub-surface formation, and hence delineate possible site for sustainable water supply and to site dumpsite. 

The study revealed that areas within VES 1,3,4,8,11,12,13,14 and 15 taken along igbuku road, oyefia street, Abbi/orogun link road,Erieta street ,Emevorroad,orogunokumareroad,ogbeikei quarters, Arobi street and ovie street respectively in orogun main town are HA type curves. Generally, the aquifer is mostly in the third and fourth geoelectric layers at a depth of 30m and within the medium to coarse sand formation.

Furthermore, VES 2 and 5 taken along solton close, country hotel and orogun market road are a KH and QH type curves with an aquifer in the third and fourth layers respectively at a depth of 30m respectively.

Also VES 6,7,16 and 9,10  taken along umoko street, ogbeuku quarters, Christ apostolic church, and agbarha and Hospital roads are HKQ and HK type curves. The aquifer generally is at a depth of 25m except that of VES 9 whose aquifer is at 16m deep.

Finally, VES 17 taken along orogun grammar school has the AAK type curve. The aquiferous layer is at a depth of 35m within the medium to coarse grained sand formation.

The geoelectric section revealed that Orogun is an extensive medium grain to coarse grain sand formation with resistivty values of between (1000 – 2600) Ωm with thickness that ranged between (30- 35)m except along Orogun grammar school that has the highest thickness of 85m. Also in areas within VES 2, 3, 7, and 8 very high resistivity values where obtained and this is attributed to observed dumpsites. While in VES 6, 15, 14 and 16 resistivity’s of between (600 – 900) Ωm where obtained and this signifies fine sand formation which is not a good formation for groundwater development.

 Meanwhile prospective ground water developers should drill to a depth of between 30-35m for substainable water supply.
