Previous studies propose that the use of a relaxed user-controlled focus (user-controlled constraints) for mining sequential patterns in a large database has a high tendency for generating interesting patterns. However, the extent or degree of relaxation of the user controlled constraints that is capable of generating optimized sequential patterns was not specified. In this study, we propose a grading scheme based on fuzzy logic which is suitable for defining the degree of a user-controlled focus for sequential pattern mining in a large database.
